VGA 2011: Amazing Spider-Man Exclusive Debut Trailer

Stone Calls New Spider-Man Movie “Epic”

Actress Emma Stone says that the “epic” story behind next summer’s Amazing Spider-Man is what drew her to take on the role of Gwen Stacy.

“I just thought her story was epic,” Stone told The Vancouver Sun of why she wanted to play the character. “When you hear the story of Gwen Stacy for the first time, I’m sure, at any age, it floors you.”

“I was so, so excited to learn about Gwen, because (I) hadn’t read the comic book growing up, and my experience was with the Sam Raimi movies. . . . I always assumed that Mary Jane was his first love,” she said. “Now I’ve become so hyper-protective of Gwen, the way she affected Peter and what happened with him and Mary Jane later on. . . . His reaction to Mary Jane is different because of Gwen.”

Describing Gwen as a “daddy’s girl,” Stone elaborated on her character’s “Amazing” arc: “Her father was the police chief. . . . She’s the oldest in her family (and) she has younger brothers. She is very responsible and very protective of her family and she loves science; she is a valedictorian. She has her whole life planned out for her and then she gets to know Peter. . . . They teach each other so much, because they’re from two so totally different backgrounds and experiences. . . . He’s never really known sit-down family dinners with siblings and parents, and what it’s like to grow up in one house your whole life, and be under the thumb of your father.”

Webb Wanted to “Reinvent” Spider-Man

Now that we’ve seen the full teaser trailer for next summer’s Amazing Spider-Man, some of those associated with the project are talking about the upcoming superhero film.

Director Mark Webb said that he wanted to “reinvent” Spidey for a new generation of fans.

“[Spider-Man]‘s been around since the 1960s,” Webb tells the Los Angeles Times. “The wealth of material here – whether it’s story or character – is really profound but I also feel it’s my responsibility to reinvent it in some ways.”

Webb went on to describe how he conceived of a fresh angle for the character.

“Peter Parker is a science whiz,” Webb said. “If you look back to the early Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics, he’s a nerd with big glasses. The idea of what a nerd is has changed in 40 or 50 years. Nerds are no longer pariahs and knowing how to write computer code is no longer a [mocked] quality.

“What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context.”

Actress Emma Stone, who plays Gwen Stacy in the movie says the new approach helped her in creating the character on-screen. Stone says she did a bit of research before she took on the role.

“I read a comprehensive book on the Stacys, and a few of the comics,” she tells the Hollywood Reporter. “Gwen is, I think, maybe a little different in the movie than in the comics. We’re kind of staying true to the comics and also building our own thing. I hope people respond to it!”

Amazing Spider-Man Villian Revealed

During an interview with Retro Radio, C. Thomas Howell revealed that Spidey will face off with the Lizard in the upcoming reboot.

Sony wants us to be hush-hush right now, he says. ” I play a relatively small role. I play a construction worker whose son is caught in the middle of a battle between the Lizard and Spider-Man on the Manhattan Bridge. Spider-Man helps me get my son back from this perilous situation.”

“Spider-Man is kind of hurting. I help him when all of the other people won’t. Part of the story is, the nation thinks he might be a bad guy. They don’t know what to think. Because of my experience on the bridge with my kid, I know he is a good guy. I pitch in and help out at the end. That is the best way,” he added.

Until now, all we knew was the villain would be played by Rhys Ifans. Until now, Sony had been keeping a tight-lid on the identity of the super villain. Many speculated that it could be the Lizard or a reboot of the Green Goblin.
